Storytelling for Week 3: The Diary of Jesus

Entry 1
Today I met a man named John.  He took me to the Jordan River and baptized me with the water and declared that the Lord would baptize me with the Holy Spirit.  After my baptism, the Lord declared himself as my Father!
I had wandered all the way from Nazareth in Galilee alone in this life, and now I have found that I am the Son of God. Now that I have learned of this new information, my Father is sending me to the wilderness for forty days and forty nights to test my faith and trust in him.  I am nervous because I am new to this faith.  How can I resist temptation when it will be so present???

Entry 2
I survived in the wilderness for forty days and forty nights while being tempted by Satan. It was one of the toughest challenges in my life but with God’s love and care I made it through.  I am glad to be back in civilization but being in the wilderness really made me grow in my faith. When I got back I found out that my friend John was arrested and taken to prison.  It is now up to me to travel and spread the word of God.

Entry 3
On my way to Capernaum I met some great guys: Andrew, Simon, James, and John. I called them to come share the word of God with me and they followed!  We went to the synagogue where I preached and then we went to Andrew and Simon's house to heal their mother. After I performed this miracle, people began to bring me all of the sick and diseased to heal them.

Entry 4
My friends and I have moved on throughout Galilee.  Today I encountered a man who was infected with leprosy and because he believed in me, I was able to heal him. I told him to not speak of this event because I do not want people to think I am any better than anyone else. However, he went and shared the story to all people.  Now everywhere I go people know my name and know of my healing touch.

Entry 5
It has been a few days since I’ve written.  I have been performing many miracles in hopes of spreading the belief in God.  I have also found another disciple, Levi.  However, now people are beginning to question me.  They question that I eat with tax collectors and talk to sinners.  Aren’t we all equal in the eyes of the Lord?  Doesn’t he love us all?  I have also been questioned about fasting and healing on the Sabbath.  It does not matter what day it is; I am still the Son of God.

Entry 6
Today I have officially found twelve disciples to follow me and spread the word of God: Simon, James, John, Andrew, Phillip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James, Thaddeaus, Simon, and Judas.  I will teach them to heal, cast out demons, and share the word of God through my actions and through my parables.

Entry 7
A tragedy happened today.  King Herod heard about the works of my disciples and was not pleased that my name is now as famous as his.  He sent an executioner to behead John the Baptist and delivered the head to a girl.  How awful??! At least John is now in Heaven with the Lord our Father.

Entry 8
Although we have mourned the loss of a friend, we must still teach about the word of God.  After our teachings we attracted a crowd of five thousand who were hungry.  We only had five loaves of bread and two fish but with the help of God, I was able to feed all the people!  Today my heart has been filled with joy.  I love seeing people happy and full of belief in God.

Entry 9
Several days of healing those that are sick and performing miracles of casting out demons have passed. Today I will teach the people many things that are relevant to their lives.
I will teach on divorce and adultery. I will also remind those that worldly possessions can become idols hindering their way into the Kingdom. I am trying to teach through the love of my Father and can only pray that the people will hear him through me!

Entry 10
The Passover was today and the disciples and I had The Last Supper.  I gave them bread and wine in resemblance of my body and my blood.  I also had to break the bad news to Peter that he will disown me in the near future.  He needed to be prepared although he did not take this well.

 Entry 11
Today I was arrested. The prison guards have allowed me to keep my diary to write in.  They have taken all of my other belongings and secluded me from my friends. Judas led the bad guys to me; I do not know why he would do that to me! I thought we were friends.  Many people spoke a false testimony against me, accusing me of things I did not do or say. It is so hard to have people against you.  I just want them to know the love of the father.

Entry 12
I know I will soon be crucified for the people have disowned me because of the word of God.   As I await my crucifixion, I have come to terms with my death.  I was placed on this earth for a purpose: to share the love and word of God.
I know that my Father will continue to save the people and to use me. One day I will rise again and continue my journey in this world to lead people to my loving Father, the Lord our God.

Authors Note: I chose to write a diary style for the Gospel of Mark.   The Gospel of Mark is primarily a story written by Mark who is a follower of Jesus and was inspired by Peter’s preaching.  He writes about Jesus and the miracles he performs, the parables he teaches with, his death and resurrection. I thought it would be fun to write it from Jesus' point of view.  There are so many things that went on in His life during this Gospel that he must've needed to write it all down in a diary!  I also tried to use twelve days to symbolize the twelve disciples that were chosen during this book of the Bible.  I had a hard time with writing more about Jesus’ thoughts and feelings toward certain people and situations.  If I were in his shoes, I know I would be very frustrated, tired, confused, angry, and happy!  However, we are often taught in church and the Bible that Jesus was pure love.  Was he ever mad at God or someone else?  Did he ever cry or ignore what others were saying to him?  These are questions that I cannot answer and therefore I could not portray the emotions and feelings of Jesus in his diary.  However, I tried to use emotions that I thought that I would feel if I were in his situation.

  1. This is fantastic! I know there is so much that went on during the time you wrote about but your summary of the events was spot on. I agree that Jesus had to of had a diary to write in. Even though I believe he could have remembered all of his action, I think he would have left the diary with a disciple to help remind them of all the good things that happen through God. Great Job!!

  2. Cobi, I really enjoyed your retelling! I thought it was very creactive to write in the style of diary entries through Jesus' perspective. From what I could tell, you managed to highlight the most important parts of the Gospel of Mark while keeping things fairly concise and readable. I also thought it was clever of you to use to the 12 days as a symbolic number that tied into the 12 disciples.

  3. I really enjoyed the way you wrote this story. It was really nice to read because it was like twelve short little mini stories! I love that it was written in Jesus' point of view because usually it is one of the disciples telling the stories. Making it into twelve short stories in tribute to the disciples was great, it was such a nice touch. You did a really good job and I enjoyed reading it! Good job!

  4. Cobi, I seriously love the idea of making Jesus a Diary. I find this to be such an incredible idea especially in the Gospel of Mark, which is known for being the book of the Bible where Jesus is most human. You are able to see Jesus become frustrated at times and pray for his Father to spare him from the pain that he was soon to endure. I really enjoyed how you made the stories into a day-by-day of his life, rather than just a compilation of the major events. This makes Jesus seem more personable than when initially think of him. It would be really cool if you did something like this but as a therapists session, creating even more of his deep inner feelings on trivial matters and petty stuff. Since it is a diary I would expand a little bit more on how he feels about some of the stuff that is happening, like John being arrested and taken to prison (and then eventually beheaded because of Herodias). I did really love your Day 4. It was so clever the way that you described how the man with leprosy went and told everyone that Jesus healed him, even after Jesus told him not to, and now everywhere Jesus goes people are throwing themselves at him so that he could heal them. Over all, fantastic job! I look forward to reading more from your portfolio.

  5. Cobi, I have to agree with Jessica! Making a diary revealing Jesus' thoughts and acts is awesome! I am also doing a diary for my storybook project! Mine also takes place during biblical times, so I hope you enjoy reading them! I think it's so creative to take the Gospel of Mark but write it in Jesus' view, I don't think many people would have thought about doing that! And since it’s in the form of his diary it makes it more personal and reveals more of Jesus’ true character and feelings. I often find myself wondering the same questions you had stated in your author's note. While we know that Jesus is human, he is also God's son. So did he experience every emotion like we do today? And like you said, I wonder if he was ever upset with his father, God? I thought your diary entries were enjoyable to read and to the point and how it highlighted all the major points in Jesus’ life. I cannot wait to read the rest of your portfolio in the coming weeks. Are you planning on sticking with the same theme with Jesus’ life or are you going to switch up the theme?

  6. Hello Cobi, I will be commenting on your portfolio. To be honest I am not sure what the portfolio entitles but I believe this story is part of your portfolio. I think the diary theme is a great theme. I have seen many different stories and storybooks that use this theme. They have all turned out so great just like yours has here. I think a diary for Jesus is a great idea. We hear about all the great things that he did from other people but the idea of what he was thinking while he did all the great things he did is perfect. I do think that instead of saying day 1 or day 2 you should say entry 1 and entry 2. I say this because in the second entry you have Jesus say he survived the 40 days and 40 nights but you have it marked as day 2. This was a little bit confusing for me. This also happens again under the day 5 entry you say, “It has been a few days since I’ve wrote.” The entry before this one was day 4. So maybe look into wording it differently or space out the numbers. Overall, I think you have done a great job so far! Keep up the good work.

  7. Cobi, I really enjoyed the fact that you retold this story from Jesus' point of view, and in diary form no less. Very inventive. I think I may need to try this style for my next storytelling assignment. It's a style that I haven't tried yet in our 8 weeks this semester. I don't know if you're a religious person or not, but this was great. I do believe in God, but I'm not super religious as far as attending church or shoving my beliefs at other people. Your story reminded me of a movie I saw a looooong time ago called "The Last Temptation of Christ." A lot of religious people had a problem with it, but it switches the story of Jesus on its ear and suggests that Jesus wasn't okay with being chosen, etc. So, it's a lot like what we do for our posts, retelling the stories we read in different ways.

Anyway, you did an excellent job. I like how you incorporated details from the read, but gave us insight into how Jesus might've felt during his trials and tribulations. Nice work!

  8. Cobi, I enjoyed your Portfolio story for Week 3: The Diary of Jesus. I’ve never looked at a portfolio before, yours was the first one. It’s different, but I like that! So to start, I liked the fact that you chose The Gospel of Mark to write on and I really enjoyed the fact that you chose to tell it in diary-form. I’ve seen that style a few times, not too many, and I think I will need to employ that form in the very near future. I like the fact that you give us, the readers, a sense of what was going on in Jesus’ mind during his trials and tribulations. I also like the fact that we get a sort of “step-by-step” of Jesus’ movement through Nazareth, to the wilderness, and to Capernaum. Then, to hear through Jesus that John the Baptist had been beheaded. How awful?? Is right!!

I really enjoyed the “Last Supper,” and what a fitting picture you chose!

I’ve told others in our class that I am a religious person, but not in the sense of preaching to others, or forcing my beliefs upon them, etc., but how terrified and how utterly afraid Jesus must have been, you know? I mean, he knew God would be there with him the whole time, but he still had to go through all of the carrying his own cross, the crown of thorns, and the suffocation on the cross. Not something I would wish on anyone. Anyway, I thought you chose a perfect story for your Portfolio and a clever way of retelling it. I’ll be back to read more soon!
